Nodak races for June 19, 2011

Posted in Uncategorized on June 20, 2011 by nightsatnodak

Nodak officials have postponed the Mods feature to next week when it will be run before next week’s feature.

Rain delay in the Mods feature five laps in. They’re gonna try to fit this in as it it’s not even 9 p.m. yet. But more rain is coming from Bismarck, so the window is small. With the cancelations the past few weeks, they really want to get this in.

I will continue with updates throughout the night. A terrible wreck happened on a startup midway through the Legends race. 21 cars started the feature and only 13 finished.

Legends Feature: 1. Wiest; 2. Huettl; 3. Morman; 4. Pankowski; 5. Sailor.

Stock Feature: 1. Burke; 2. Steve Pfeifer, Bowbells; 3. Kelly Henderson, Minot; 4. Conway; 5. Robbie Rosselli, Minot

Hobby: Feature: 1. Brandt; 2. Vennes; 3. Beeter; 4. Medler; 5. Shad May, Williston.

Notes: Brandt steals Vennes’ lead with three laps to go to win his second Nodak race of the year.

Schatz to race at Nodak Speedway tonight

Posted in Uncategorized on May 22, 2011 by nightsatnodak

World of Outlaws driver Donny Schatz will be racing at Nodak Speedway tonight, announced earlier today.

Schatz, originally from Minot, lives in Fargo and quickly made the decision to race in tonight’s Northern Outlaw Sprint Association competition. NOSA is an organization out of Grand Forks that features semi-pro sprint racing, assuming, of course, that the World of Outlaws is the major leagues.

I’m excited to see what kind of competition NOSA drivers can make for Schatz. It should make for a great night of racing. The rain has apparently passed, so let’s go racing! Action begins with hot laps at 5 p.m. and racing at six.

Back to glory for Ed Turnbull

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19, 2011 by nightsatnodak

The Turnbull cars in Arizona in 2010.

As documented in my story from Monday’s edition, Ed Turnbull is back.

Not only is he back; he’s back in form. Turnbull,  from Estevan, Saskatchewan, pulled away last Sunday night and it looked like he was going to win by more than a quarter-lap. A few cautions made it interesting, but for the most part, Turnbull dominated.

Sons Aaron and Tyson have had plenty of success and we wish them well here at NightsatNodak.com. But there’s something magical about a veteran coming back like that and winning. It makes the IMCA Modifieds that much more competitive and fun to watch.

One of things not in my story was that Turnbull said he was a little uncomfortable with having Marlyn Seidler within striking distance. He noted that his good relationship with runner-up Les McLenehan, another driver from Estevan, made sure that if McLenehan overtook him, it would be on the straight and narrow. But Seidler can be very aggressive, and Turnball noted in our interview that he was a little concerned about Seidler getting over-aggressive.

Other winners from last Sunday were Joe Flory of Williston in the IMCA Stocks, Dana Brandt of Minot in the hobby stocks and Minot’s Jordan Huettl grabbed the checkered flag in the INEX Legends.

On a side note, the amount of cautions on opening night was almost unbearable. When 25 minutes pass by and you’ve only raced three laps, it’s time for something drastic. Thus, officials decided to put them single file to avoid so many crashes and cautions.

Welcome to NightsatNodak.com, a blog dedicated to racing at Nodak Speedway in Minot, North Dakota.

Though this will highlight primarily Nodak racing, I will be including tidbits from area tracks such as Williston, Rugby, Bottineau, Underwood, Estevan and Mandan.
